1978 Volkswagen Westfalia Riviera
For decades, Volkswagen’s van-based camper was the affordable RV of choice for those with a passion for camping and long-distance road trips. Rising prices and declining sales halted U.S. imports of VW campers in the mid-1990s, meaning that demand for surviving examples remains high. This 1978 Volkswagen Westfalia Riviera, for sale on Hemmings.com, appears to be a well-maintained example with new front brakes, a pair of new batteries and a recent tune up. It isn’t clear how many miles have rolled beneath its wheels over the past 38 years, but the air-cooled four was rebuilt 12,000 miles back and the paint appears to be relatively fresh. Until VW decides to import its new California camper van (and we wouldn’t hold our breath waiting), a Westy like this is your next best alternative for an RV that can double as a daily driver.
